About Australia

Australia - The Natural Wonderland

The Commonwealth of Australia, is situated in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and  Pacific Oceans. Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent and its outlying islands. The mainland is the largest island and the world\'s smallest, flattest continent.

Australia is made up of six states and two territories. The population is around 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of  Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation\'s capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, but has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre.

Australia\'s population has quadrupled since the end of World War I, thanks to an ambitious immigration program. From the end of World War II in 1945 and through to 2000, almost 5.9 million of the total population settled in the country as new immigrants, meaning that nearly two out of every seven Australians were born overseas.

Since Australia became a federation and a Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901, the country has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a commonwealth country.

Australia has one of the most outstanding economies of the world in recent years. It is the thirteenth largest economy in the world. As a high-growth, low- inflation, low interest rate economy, it is more vibrant than ever before. There is an efficient government sector, a flexible labour market and a very competitive business sector. It has made a comparatively large investment  in social infrastructure, including education, training, health and transport. The Australian workforce has seen many improvements over the last decade, leading to the surge in productivity in the 1990s.

Its abundant physical resources attract huge foreign investment. Australia has enjoyed a high standard of living since the nineteenth century. It ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations ANZUS, OECD, APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and the World Trade Organization.

In Australia over 200 different languages and dialects are spoken, including 45 indigenous languages. Although Australia has no official language, English is spoken by a majority of its population and hence it has become the de facto national language.
